Manchester Day Parade 2010

beproudmanchesterAcross the City Manchester residents are invited to help create an amazing new event. Manchester Day Parade will be an inspirational spectacle for all to enjoy on Sunday 20th June.

We need your help to tell us what makes Manchester Out of this World for you. The Parade will bring people together to celebrate the city, exploring the stories and characters that make us Mancunians.

Your community can work with professional artists to visualise ideas or maybe you’re an artist, costume designer, music maker or choreographer - there's opportunities for all - we'd love to hear from you.

Created by Manchester People, produced by Walk the Plank and commissioned by Manchester City Council, The Manchester Day Parade is a new and spectacular addition to the City’s annual calendar of events.

Conceived with the ambition of celebrating the creativity and diversity which is synonymous with this city, it is a great opportunity for communities to celebrate individual and collective pride in their city as well as portray the stories of what makes them feel uniquely Mancunian in a highly visual way.

Expect a vivid display of colour, noise, dance, floats and community pride, in a parade that will celebrate what is ‘Out of this world’ (the theme for this year’s parade) about the city.

We at Walk the Plank will be working with artists, individuals and community groups to find out what makes Manchester Out of this World for them.

Would your group, organisation or family like to take part in the first Manchester Day Parade...a celebration of all that's great about our city?

This is your chance to be part of an amazing procession that brings colour, music, dance and larget-than-life characters to the streets.

What do you think is so fantastic about your city that it's 'Out of this world'? Who are your heroes? What bit of Manchester past or present would like to celebrate?

There will be opportunities to create floats and costumes, or work with dance specialists to develop movement and dance, or to come along on the day and get dressed up in fantastic outfits and make up.

The are 3 levels of involvement that you can apply for:

GOLD - for groups that want to work with an artist to develop your own ideas for designing a float, or creating costumes, or making music or movement.

SILVER - for groups that want to take part and already have costumes/a float, or groups that want to take part but have only a limited time to work in advance of the parade.

BRONZE - for individuals, small groups or families who want to take part and are willing to work with other people to create a section of the parade, or want to get involved but don't know where to start...

IMPORTANT: Deadline for GOLD participation is March 31st

We can't promise to involve everyone that wants to take part in the first year, but we are certainly going to try.

There will be a taster weekend on Saturday March 12th at 11am - 1pm or between 2pm - 4pm at Manchester Town Hall. So come along and see what it is all about.
